What is body composition analysis?

08/06/2024

Body composition analysis is a method of breaking down the body into its core components fat, protein, minerals, and body water. It describes your weight more accurately and provides a better glimpse into your overall health than traditional methods. Body composition analysis can accurately show changes in fat mass, muscle mass, and body fat percentage to help you clearly identify muscular deficiencies and dial in your nutrition and weightlifting regimen accordingly.

A healthy balance of fat and muscles is a vital component of long-term health. Having sufficient muscle mass helps bolster the immune system to fight off illnesses, support good posture, enhance mobility, and prevent frailty in old age.

If you only focus on losing weight, you may end up losing muscle mass and eventually experience slowed metabolic rate, thereby sabotaging your efforts. By differentiating between muscle and fat, body composition removes the guesswork of determining what your weight fluctuations mean, be it muscle gain, fat loss, or anything in between.

Whatever your goals may be, an important thing to keep in mind during your health journey is that skinny does not always equal healthy. Those classified as "skinny fat" are typically unaware of their potential health risks because, unlike subcutaneous fat, visceral fat can't be measured with BMI and scales so it goes undetected. Whether you fall into one of the above categories, or you just want to know how to start making healthy changes, understanding your muscle-balance is a great place to start.

The InBody Body Composition Analyzer is a Precision Medical Device.

Multiple Frequencies provide precise body water analysis. The ability to distinguish between extracellular and total body water is important to identify fluid imbalances related to acute inflammation or edema.

The 8-point tactile electrode system including thumb electrodes and a simple holding position (easy to duplicate) ensures measurements are accurate and reproducible

Direct segmental measurements measure impedance in the limbs and torso separately, yielding highly accurate results without using empirical data based on factors like age, gender, ethnicity, athleticism, and body shape.

Bioelectrical impedance uses very minor currents which are absolutely harmless to the body. Many medical institutions are using this method!

Who should NOT be tested with the InBody

People with implanted defibrillators or pacemakers should not be tested. Although the electrical current that is sent through the body is extremely low, it is not recommended for this population.

Tips during Scan

Stay balanced and centered on the footplates. Remain still and completely quiet during the scan. Relax your body! Otherwise, it is difficult to replicate the same way muscles were contracted during subsequent tests. Keep your arms straight and away from your body, so that your upper arms have minimal contact with your torso.

The InBody 570 measures a maximum weight of 250kg accurately.

Schedule your Scan

Reserve a time for your InBody measurement on Mondays from 9:30-10:30am, and on Fridays from 5-6pm: book via Mindbody. Each reservation takes 10 minutes (so if you are the second reserved for 5pm, you will be scanned around 5:10pm). Alternately, you can be scanned on a first-come-first-served basis whenever you see Open Gym on RCFN schedule. To get the most accurate results:

  • Insure the test is conducted before a meal or at least two hours after your last meal. The presence of food mass may result in measurement errors.
  • Use the bathroom! The volume of urine and excrement is included in the weight measurement, resulting in measurement errors if you fail to void.
  • Do not exercise right before conducting the test - it causes temporary changes in body composition which will throw off the measurement.
  • Stand still for about 5 minutes prior to the measurement. If you are seated for a period of time and then stand up, body water may move to the lower extremities of the body and throw off the measurement.
  • Do not conduct the test while sweaty or wet. Sweating causes a temporary change in a person's body composition.
  • Women are advised not to be scanned during their menstruation cycle. Women who are menstruating will not get accurate results due to subtle changes in their body water.
  • Do not wear any accessories or metal during the test in order to get the most accurate results.
  • Pregnant women can be tested for their nutritional status and water balance. However, due to changes in water content for pregnant women, some of the results should not be interpreted as accurate.
